HIGHLAND TRAVEL INFORMATION - ONLY POSSIBLE
DURING MID SUMMER AND ONLY BY 4X4 VEHICLES!
Highland roads in Iceland
are usually narrow gravel roads, and most rivers are unabridged. On maps, they
are indicated with an F before the road number, with most of these roads
intended for jeeps only. Highland roads are open only during the summertime,
weather and other circumstances permitting. Information about opening dates can
be obtained by phoning 1777 or at www.road.is Driving outside marked trails is prohibited and is
subject to nature conservation law. Crossing rivers should be attempted only in
four-wheel-drive vehicles, such as jeeps. Ensure that the four-wheel drive has
been engaged before driving into the water. Drive very slowly but steadily in
first gear and use the low range if available. Keep in mind that fords over
glacial rivers keep changing. On warm summer days, the flow increases as the
day progresses. Heavy rain often causes rivers to swell, sometimes making them
uncrossable even for large and well equipped vehicles. Glacial rivers usually
have less water in the mornings. Deaths have been caused by underestimating the
water volume in rivers. Before crossing a glacial river, it is necessary to
examine its velocity, depth and bottom by wading into it. If you find that you
would be unwilling to wade across the river on foot, you should not attempt to
drive across it. Seek advice from experienced drivers and watch how and where
they cross. There is only one petrol station in the highlands (at Hveravellir)
that sells petrol and diesel. Keep this in mind when driving in the highlands.
It is important to know the vehicle’s insurance coverage before going on a trip
in the highlands. For example, rented vehicles are not insured for damage that
occurs while crossing rivers or lakes, and the chassis is not insured.
Accommodation is limited in the highlands, and you need to make reservations with
sufficient notice if you don’t want to sleep in the vehicle or in a tent.
Rangers operate at most major tourist centres in the highlands. Their job is to
receive travellers and provide information. Travellers should obey rangers’
instructions.
Safety first
Driving in Iceland is quite
different from many other countries. Special caution must be shown when a paved
road ends and you drive onto a gravel road which often is narrower and
slippery. Please also take extra care when approaching one of the many
single-lane bridges which can be found all around Iceland, even on the ring
road number one.
Highland routes (F-marked
routes) are only open to traffic and passable during midsummer.
Mountain roads in Iceland
Please note: Driving car
groups , A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I on roads that are marked with an F on public
maps, as well as driving the Kjölur (road 35) or Kaldidalur (road 550) is
forbidden. A breach of this article authorizes Procar to collect fines from
the renter, egualing the amount of own-risk (CDW as stated in Procar pricelist
at any given time. This does not affect the renter’s liability regarding
damage. No insurance covers damages to the chassis of the vehicle nor damages
caused by driving in or across rivers or any kind of waterways. Driving outside
marked trails is prohibited and is subject to nature conservation law. It is
important to know the vehicle's insurance coverage before going on a trip in
the highlands. For example, rented vehicles are not insured for damage that
occurs while crossing rivers or lakes, and the chassis is not insured.
Driving restrictions
Car groups J, K, L, M, N,
O, P, Q, R, S, T, are the only car groups allowed to drive on roads
Marked as F roads on public
maps. This also applies to Kjölur (road 35) and Kaldidalur
(Road 550). No insurance
covers damages to the chassis of the vehicle nor damages
caused by driving in or
across rivers or any kind of waterways.
Practical Information
Special warning signs
indicate danger ahead, such as sharp bends, but there is generally
no separate sign to reduce
speed. Please choose a safe speed according to conditions.
Motorists are obliged by
law to use headlights at all times, day and night. ln Iceland, all
driving off roads or marked
tracks is prohibited by law. Passengers in the front and back
seats of an automobile are
required by law to use safety belts. Icelandic law forbids any
driving under the influence
of alcohol.
