Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival


Individual transfer by Flybus shuttle bus from Keflavik airport to your accommodation in Reykjavik.

Day 2. Volcano Crater, Seals, Fjords and Mountains


At 09:00 meet our tour guide and depart from Icelandair Hotel Natura. Travel west along the scenic Hvalfjörđur fjord and the town of Borgarnes. Easy hike on Grábrók volcano crater in the middle of a greenish lava field. Further north stop at the turf church of Víđimýri and then continue along scenic fjord landscape and over several mountain passes until we reach Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. The overnight location at Akureyri allows you to walk around the town.

Day 3. The Capital of North Iceland, Lake Mývatn and Geothermal Baths


In the morning explore the town of Akureyri, also called the capital of North Iceland, and admire the panoramic view over the Eyjafjörđur fjord. From April-October 2021 there are optional whale watching tours available from 09:00-12:00 am; see https://www.whalewatchingakureyri.is
In the afternoon travel to Gođafoss – the waterfalls of the Gods. Then explore Lake Mývatn, known as a geological wonderland and for its abundant birdlife. See the strange lava formations at Kálfaströnd, the pseudo craters at Skútustađir and the tephra cone Hverfjall. End the afternoon relaxing in the geothermal Mývatn Nature Baths with a fantastic view over the whole area.

There is a possibility of seeing the Northern Lights during the evening from mid-September to mid-April.

Day 4. Lava Labyrinth, Hot Springs and Travel East


In the morning walk in the lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir “the dark castles”, hoping to get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. In the afternoon, visit the hot spring area of Námaskarđ with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. Head through the uninhabited highlands and moon-like surrounding to East Iceland. From June to August the tour includes a detour to the powerful waterfall Dettifoss.

Day 5. East Fjords


It’s a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords. In the afternoon see Vatnajökull – Europe’s biggest glacier that is visible all over Southeast Iceland.

There is a possibility of seeing the Northern Lights during the evening from mid-September to mid-April.

Day 6. Vatnajökull Glacier, Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach & South Coast


Start the day with a stop at Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and explore the extraordinary site where you might see seals swimming in arctic waters. From May through September 2021 only, a boat tour between floating icebergs is included in the program. Just across the street, you can walk on the so-called Diamond Beach, where large icebergs get stranded. Travel along the southern part of the glacier Vatnajökull and get a glimpse at Europe’s second-largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe’s largest glacier.
In the afternoon, a beautiful drive with many natural wonders awaits us as we head across the Eldhraun lava field, cross the sandy desert of the south coast, overlooked by mountainous cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls. Stroll along the black lava beach of Reynisfjara near Vík. In the small village of Skógar, there is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Iceland’s past comes alive at one of Iceland’s finest museums, the Skógar folk museum with its turf houses assemblage of traditions of territorial relics on display. Continue to the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There is an interesting trail that goes behind the fall – if you are prepared to get wet!

Day 7. Icelandic Horses and Golden Circle


Explore classics today as we travel the route of the Golden Circle sights. Start the day at Friđheimar, where you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Later on, see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur “the Churn” which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Continue to Gullfoss, “the golden falls“, which is a double waterfall that tumbles 32 meters into the Hvítá river and attracts travellers in summer and winter. Travel inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we return to Reykjavík, we take you for a short city tour to show highlights of the world’s northernmost capital.

Northern Lights: From mid-September to mid-April optional Northern Lights evening tours can be booked at the lobby of your hotel, should weather conditions be favourable.

CANCELLATIONS:
A cancellation fee of 20% of the tour price and accommodation will be retained by us for cancellations made from 4 to 8 weeks before tour start. From 28 days until 8 days before tour start, the fee is 50%. No refund is possible for cancellations less than 8 days before tour start, or for no shows, and a tour begun, but not completed. The exchange of one arrangement for another must be agreed by us beforehand. TOURIS reserves the right to charge a non-refundable bookings fee/payment deposit of 20 % in order to secure space on the tour.

Note that there is limited day light, about 5-6 hours, for departures mid November to end of January. For your information the shortest day light in Iceland is on the 21st of December, about 4 hours.

NOTE - Most double rooms in Iceland are actually twin bedded rooms.

CHILDREN DISCOUNT: 20% discount for children 8-11 years of age if sharing room with parents. Tour is not recommended for children younger than eight years of age. Triple rooms are double rooms with extra bed and ideal for two adults and one child.

NOTE: Itineraries may be subject to change at short notice during severe weather conditions and certain outdoor activities/day trips may be cancelled during the winter season in Iceland. In these rare cases, where situations of force majeure apply, excursions/activities cannot be refunded but the local guides will try their best to find reasonable alternatives where and whenever possible.

PAYMENT - A non refundable deposit of 20%, of the total package price should reach TOURIS within 2 days of confirmation of booking and full payment not later than 6 weeks prior to tour departure. In case of delay on payments, TOURIS will reserve the right to treat this as a cancellation and withdraw its confirmation of the services.
Every detail regarding the booking must be included, in order for TOURIS to ensure efficiency, including the passengers´ name, flight information, all accommodation, tours and other services.

TRAVEL INSURANCE - To avoid dispute in case of cancellation, we strongly recommend that our clients purchase a comprehensive travel insurance in their home country, that covers your cost should you have to cancel your tour. This kind of travel insurance is usually not expensive and it frequently covers other risks too.
