Over the course of three unforgettable days, this trekking adventure leads you into the remote southern Highlands of Iceland from the geothermal wonderland of Landmannalaugar to the striking green hues of Grænihryggur. Beginning and ending in Reykjavík, you’ll hike through the renowned trails of Fjallabak Nature Reserve while discovering remarkable natural landmarks along the way.

Your first day introduces the rugged beauty of the Laugahraun lava field, the colorful slopes of Brennisteinsalda, and the narrow passage of Grænagil canyon, before unwinding in natural geothermal pools.

On day two, you’ll embark on a full-day trek to Grænihryggur, where vivid green ridges contrast dramatically with black volcanic sands and shimmering crater lakes.

The final day is dedicated to the journey back to Reykjavík, with scenic stops including Ljótipollur crater, Sigöldufoss waterfall, Háifoss canyon, Gjáin valley, and Hjálparfoss waterfall.

Throughout the tour, you’ll travel in a small group, stay in comfortable mountain huts, and experience Iceland’s Highlands in a peaceful, uncrowded setting.

Day 1: Laugahringur Loop & Hot Springs

Your journey begins with an early departure from Reykjavík, heading deep into the Highlands. Along the route, take in sweeping views of lava fields and the imposing silhouette of Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes.

By midday, you’ll arrive in Landmannalaugar, a geothermal oasis surrounded by vividly colored rhyolite mountains. After settling into your mountain hut and enjoying lunch, you’ll head out on the Laugahringur loop.

The trail crosses the Laugahraun lava field—an expansive stretch of solidified volcanic rock—before climbing the mineral-rich slopes of Brennisteinsalda. As you descend into Grænagil canyon, the landscape shifts into striking shades of green and turquoise.

In the afternoon, return to camp for a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs, followed by dinner and a quiet evening in the huts.

Day 2: Grænihryggur Hike

After breakfast, set out for the highlight of the trip—a full-day hike to Grænihryggur.

A short drive brings you into Fjallabak Nature Reserve, where expansive valleys and volcanic ridges dominate the landscape. The trail leads to an otherworldly ridge of vivid green tones, surrounded by black sands, crater lakes, and multicolored mountains.

You’ll pause for a packed lunch immersed in this extraordinary scenery before returning to Landmannalaugar. The day ends with another soak in the hot springs and a satisfying dinner.

Day 3: Fjallabak Nature reserve and back to Reykjavík

Following breakfast, begin the return journey to Reykjavík, stopping at several iconic natural sites.

First is Ljótipollur crater, whose deep red slopes and vivid blue lake create a striking contrast. Next, visit Sigöldufoss, where multiple waterfalls cascade over dark lava cliffs.

Continue to Háifoss, Iceland’s second-highest waterfall, plunging dramatically into a canyon below. A short hike leads to the river viewpoint, where you’ll also enjoy a packed lunch.

Before heading back, explore the lush oasis of Gjáin valley, dotted with streams and pools, and admire the twin falls of Hjálparfoss framed by basalt columns.

Arrival in Reykjavík is scheduled for the early evening.

As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will apply cancellation charges as shown below from the time when written notification of the cancellation is received:
Cancellations with more than 14 days' notice before trip departure: You will be refunded 90% of the total tour price. 10% is non-refundable, as this represents our direct cost of booking and preparing your tour.
Cancellations with less than 14 days' notice before trip departure: You will be refunded 50% of your total tour price. 50% is non-refundable, as this represents our direct cost of cancelling any arrangements made for your tour.
Cancellations with less than 48-hours' notice before trip departure: No refund will be given if tours are cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, as we will be charged for all costs such as guides, transport etc.

You Bring:
Hiking boots, good sturdy boots with sufficient ankle support for walking on rough trails. They should have a robust sole and preferably waterproof
Warm jacket, fleece, primaloft or similar

Payment:
A non refundable deposit of 10%, of the total package price should reach TOURIS within 3 days of confirmation of booking and full payment not later than 6 weeks prior to tour departure. In case of delay on payments, TOURIS will reserve the right to treat this as a cancellation and withdraw its confirmation of the services.
Every detail regarding the booking must be included, in order for TOURIS to ensure efficiency, including the passengers name, flight information, all accommodation, tours and other services.

Travel Insurance:
To avoid dispute in case of cancellation, we strongly recommend that our clients purchase a comprehensive travel insurance in their home country, that covers your cost should you have to cancel your tour. This kind of travel insurance is usually not expensive and it frequently covers other risks too.
