Icelandĺs most famous hiking trail

Accommodation in mountain huts or tents.

Laugavegur is Icelandĺs most famous hiking trail, because there are few trails in the country that offer more diversity and beauty.

There is a marked track for most of the route and your guide will make sure you donĺt miss the best spots along the way. The hike begins in Landmannalaugar, a geothermal wonderland and the route goes south through the highlands.
On the way we go through fields of obsidian lava, we will see red and yellow mountains, black sands and sparkling white glaciers. The trail ends in ١rsm÷rk, a green valley, nestled at the foot of the infamous glacier and a volcano Eyjafjallaj÷kull which erupted in 2010 and completely reformed some of the area. The luggage is transported by a 4x4 vehicle from hut to hut so you only have to carry a light pack during the hike. All meals are included and your guide will provide local information and assistance. In the huts, the guides will, along with the group, prepare great meals to enjoy together in a magical environment and atmosphere.

We have several hiking tours in this area. Please take a look at HT01, HT05 and HT14.

Itinerary

Day 1. ReykjavÝk - Landmannalaugar - Hrafntinnusker

The tour starts by the ReykjavÝk tourist info at Reykjavik's City Hall (Rßh˙si) by Tj÷rnin pond at 7.00 a.m. It's located in downtown Reykjavik and within walking distance from most hotels, hostels and guesthouses in central Reykjavik. You can also meet us at one of our other meeting points (see tour description). After introductions, we board the scheduled bus that takes us to Landmannalaugar. The drive takes about 3-4 hours, on the way we travel along the south coast and then turn inland and pass Iceland's most active volcano, Hekla. Our hike starts in Landmannalaugar as we walk through this geothermal wonderland and look at the colorful mountains and steaming hot springs. The trail takes us through the rough lava field, Laugahraun. From there we move to the slopes of Brennisteinsalda, which is known worldwide for its incredible spectrums of colors and photogenic looks. We walk by the beautiful hot spring Storihver before crossing into the obsidian desert by Hrafntinnusker. Storihver is one of the very few green grounds we will encounter on this day. We spend the night in the hut in Hrafntinnusker, one of the most remote huts in Iceland.

Distance: 12km (7.5 mi)
Walking time: 4-5 hrs
Ascent: 470 m (1540 ')

Day 2. Hrafntinnusker - ┴lftavatn Lake

After breakfast we head out again and walk along Reykjafj÷ll mountain range and descend into the J÷kultungur area. The geothermal activity has turned these gullies yellow and red. From the top of J÷kultungur there is a great view over the Fjallabak area and lake ┴lftavatn, which is our next overnight stop. Before reaching ┴lftavatn we need to cross an unbridged stream on foot. We spend the night in a hut by ┴lftavatn lake.

Distance: 12km (7.5 mi)
Walking time: 4-5 hrs
Descent: 490 m (1610 ')

Day 3. ┴lftavatn Lake - Emstrur

We begin the day with another refreshing stream crossing as we make our way past the green volcano Stˇras˙la and further to the black desert of MŠlifellssandur. We walk through this black glacial desert and into Emstrur area where we will enjoy the view of Eyjafjallaj÷kull and Mřrdalsj÷kull glaciers. Before reaching the hut in Botnar we make a detour to look at Markarfljˇtsglj˙fur, a magnificent 200m deep canyon carved out by the glacial river Markarfljˇt. The hut in Botnar is located in a little green oasis, a welcome sight after walking through the black sands.

Distance: 15km (9.5 mi)
Walking time: 6-7 hrs
Descent: 40 m (130 ')

Day 4. Emstrur - ١rsm÷rk - Seljalandsfoss - ReykjavÝk

We continue along the canyon on our way to ١rm÷rk. The trail takes us within a few kilometers of the great Mřrdalsj÷kull glacier. We walk past the peculiar shaped Mt. Einhyrningur and into the dense birch forest in ١rsm÷rk. ١rsm÷rk is a green valley nesting at the foot of the glaciers Eyjafjallaj÷kull and Mřrdalsj÷kull. We catch a bus to ReykjavÝk in the afternoon. We will be returning to Reykjavik at around 21:30 and offer drop off at Miklabraut 101 Orkan gas station (by Kringlan shopping mall), Reykjavik Campsite and the City Hall on VonarstrŠti.

Distance: 15km (9.5 mi)
Walking time: 6-7 hrs
Descent: 300 m (985 ')

In case of delay on payments, TOURIS will reserve the right to treat this as a cancellation and withdraw its confirmation of the services.
Every detail regarding the booking must be included, in order for TOURIS to ensure efficiency, including the passengers name, flight information, all accommodation, tours and other services.

Travel Insurance: To avoid dispute in case of cancellation, we strongly recommend that our clients purchase a comprehensive travel insurance in their home country, that covers your cost should you have to cancel your tour. This kind of travel insurance is usually not expensive and it frequently covers other risks too.

Accommodation in mountain huts: Overnight stay will be in a shared mountain hut or tent in beautiful surroundings. All the huts are heated with either gas or geothermal water, so a light sleeping bag will be enough to keep you warm. The huts have communal dormitories with bunk beds. Some of the bunks are double and some are single so you may have to share a double bunk. We recommend that you bring earplugs and an eye/sleeping mask if you have trouble sharing a room with others. The huts all have toilet facilities and free drinking water. All the huts (except the first night in Hrafntinnusker) have gas heated showers, a 5 min shower costs 500 ISK. There is limited electricity at the huts and the access is restricted to a few power outlets if any. Charging costs 1,000 ISK and is often only possible for a limited amount of time (if possible at all). We recommend bringing a portable charging device if you have one. If you don't and charging is necessary for you while on the trek, you will need to invest in one. You can get very inexpensive ones that work well.

There is no service in the huts (no shop, no food, no beer or wine for sale!).

Accommodation in tents: You will be sleeping in a 2-3 person tent that is very simple to put up and take down. Single tents are available, please contact us for price. The campsites all have toilet facilities and free drinking water. All the campsites(except the first night) have gas heated showers, a 5 min shower costs 500 ISK and they do accept credit cards or cash.

Luggage: During the day you will only need to carry a light day pack containing lunch, water bottle, river crossing shoes, rain-gear, and other items or clothing you might need for the day such as medication, sunglasses, extra socks, etc. Your luggage will be transported from hut to hut in a 4x4 vehicle with a trailer. There is a limit of 1 piece of luggage for each participant that can weigh up to 20 kg. To make sure your belongings stay dry pack everything in a water and dust proof travel sack, we recommend a duffel bag. Fragile items such as cameras should packed in proper cases/bags. We highly recommend not to carry with you computers or others valuable devices while hiking or doing any other outdoor activities as run the risk of getting wet or damaged.

Sleeping bag rental: - If you are travelling light or simply do not own a sleeping bag they are available for rent. Sleeping bag rental must be booked before the tour starts and are available in the booking process on our website.

Food: Our standard menu includes milk products, fish, nuts, meat and bread so if you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, have allergies or have other specific food preferences then please put this in as a comment when you book your trip so we can make the suitable arrangements. This will help us in supplying the best meals possible for everyone. The meals are prepared by the guide and the group together. Although the guide is usually the leader on the project this can go all ways. This often brings the whole group together and makes a nice, fun and cozy atmosphere. We have a saying in Icelandic ômargar hendur vinna lÚtt verkö which basically means when people help out the job is a lot easier and we think that this fits perfectly to this question. Make food and friends at the same time!
