Day 2: South Coast & Waterfalls

The glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull are towering above the area. On March 20th 2010, a volcanic eruption started on Fimmvörđuháls, a mountain ridge between the two glaciers. The eruption lasted a couple of weeks. After this eruption came to an end, a new and larger eruption started underneath the nearby icecap of Eyjafjallajökull. This eruption lasted until 23. May 2010 and caused a lot of problems for international flights in the northern hemisphere. Drive to Dyrhólaey headland and to Reynisdrangar with spectacular coast with beautiful rock formations and thousands of nesting seabirds in summer. Seals can frequently be seen in this area.

Highlights of the day: - Seljalandsfoss Waterfall - Skógafoss Waterfall - Vík Town - Reynisfjara beach - Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve

Day 3: The Great Golden Circle & Slakki Zoo

Head for Thingvellir National Park, a unique place from a geological point of view. Research has shown that Thingvellir is a natural wonder on an international scale. The faults and fissures of the area make evident the rifting of the earth's crust. Thingvellir is the most historical place in Iceland and a place of exceptional beauty. Explore the famous Great Geysir hot spring area and see Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes. See Gullfoss, one of Icelands most beautiful waterfall and its smaller neighbour, Faxi. Visit the Slakki Zoo at Laugarás and get to know Icelandic wild and domestic animals before heading back to your cottage. A full day of sights and sceneries.

Highlights of the day:
Ţingvellir
Geysir
Gullfoss Waterfall

Faxi waterfall

Optional activity:
Snorkeling in Silfra Fissure

Overnight:

Day 4: Thjórsárdalur & Mt. Hekla.

Drive through the Thjórsardalur valley at the foot of Mt. Hekla, Icelands best known volcano and to the medeval reconstructed Viking Chiftain‘s farm at Stöng that was buried under thick layers of volcanic ash by the 1104 eruption of Mt. Hekla. A short hike from here takes you to the beautiful Gjáin gorge. Stop to take a look at the pretty Hjálparfoss waterfall. With a 4 wheel drive vehicle in summer, you can make a detour to visit Landmannalaugar geothermal area, where you can take a bath in a natural hot spring in the beautiful and almost surreal surroundings. This route is NOT passable,- even NOT with a 4 wheel drive vehicle during the winter months. Back to the cottage in the evening.

Highlights of the day:
Mt. Hekla
Gjáin
Hjálparfoss Waterfall

Overnight:
Hella area (Cottage)

Day 5: Skaftafell National Park & Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Head to the east and drive across the Mýrdalssandur floodplains and Eldhraun, the largest lavafield ever to flow on Earth in historical times and to the small picturesque village Kirkjubaejarklaustur. At Kirkjubćjarklaustur, often abbreviated as "Klaustur", see Kirkjugólfiđ (the Church Floor), a protected natural monument just east of Klaustur. Kirkjugólfiđ is a columnar basalt, eroded and shaped by wind and water, only a few minutes’ walk from the road. Then continue over Skeiđarársandur, vast tracts of black sandy desert washed down by torrential glacial rivers. Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe is to the north from here. In the afternoon of 21. May 2011, a sub-glacial eruption started in the Grímsvötn volcanic system underneath Vatnajökull Glacier. Later the same day, the eruption broke the ice cover of the glacier and started spewing volcanic ash into the air. The amount of ash fall was the greatest close to the village Kirkjubćjarklaustur. The eruption went on for about a week. It ceased on 28. May 2011. Stop at the Skaftafell National Park an oasis wedged between sand and glacier. Its natural beauty is a result of favourable weather conditions and the interaction of fire and ice. Beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap, towering above Skaftafell is one of Icelands most active volcano, Grímsvötn. See the interesting Visitors Center where you can learn the history of fire and ice in the region and a video of the volcanic eruption and the catastrophic flood in the area in 1996 can also be viewed. An interesting hiking trail takes you to Svartifoss, one of Icelands most picturesque waterfall, framed in by beautiful basalt columns that surround it. In the area are many other interesting hiking trails. Continue to Jökulsárlón, the Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs have broken off the Breiđamerkurjökull glacier and float to the sea. A boat tour among the icebergs on the Lagoon is available in summer.

Highlights of the day:
Skaftafell National Park
Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Overnight:
Hella area (Cottage)

Recommended optional activity:
Amphibian boat Tour on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
