Hólmavík town

Hólamvík is a small and picturesque fishing town in the Strandir area, with a population of about 400 people. It is located by Steingrímsfjörður Fjord, on the east coast of the Westfjords. Hólmavík is the largest settlement in the Strandir area and its economy depends mainly on fishing and fish processing but in the recent years, tourism has grown rapidly.

Witchcraft

Hólmavík is known for its interesting history of witchcraft and sorcery and a visit to the Sorcery and Witchcraft Museum, located at Hólmavík is an interesting experience in order to get insight into witchcraft and witch hunting that was practiced here in the 17th century. In those days, the Westfjords were infamous for witches and sorcerers.

Hólmavík is a service center for the surrounding farming community and offers a wide range of services. In Hólmavík there is a swimming pool, a tourist information centre, restaurants, a supermarket, hotels and guesthouses, a good campsite as well as an airport.

From the campsite at Hólmavík, there are several interesting hiking trails, and to mention one, there is a short hiking trail to Kálfanesborgir above Hólmavík with great views over Steingrímsfjörður Fjord, Drangsnes village and Grímsey Island.
